House & Family History: Tucked away, quite out of sight from the 21st century world, without even so much as a set of grand gates, let alone a lodge, to announce its presence, Whitton is a rural delight from the early years of the 18th century. Of red brick, with painted stone dressings, the house has a central giant pediment flanked by a pair of projecting gabled wings gazing out across gardens and a pool toward an undulating park populated by the Halliday family's award-winning herd of Jersey cattle. Whitton was seemingly built for John Topp and his wife Ursula around 1731, and it feels as though it has changed remarkably little since their time. Inside, paneling provides proportion to many of the rooms, and an elegant small staircase, with three differing turned newels to each tread, rises to the upper floor. In the immaculate gardens is to be seen a rare treat—a timber Chinoiserie garden house dating from the middle years of the 18th century.
