Whittingehame House (Whittinghame House)

  • Built / Designed For: James Balfour

    House & Family History: Whittingehame House was the birthplace of prime minister Arthur Balfour and the scientist Francis Maitland Balfour. Between 1939 and 1941 the estate was home to a school for Jewish refugee children coming to Britain from Germany through the Kindertransport. After the the war, Whittingehame was home to Holt School. In 1980 the house, together with 39 acres, was sold and divided into flats.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: Edward VII planted a tree on the estate during a visit in the early 20th century.
