The house from a circa 1910 postcard
Earlier Houses: There was probably an earlier house on the site of the 17th century house.
Built / Designed For: Sir Henry Cooke, 2nd Bt.
House & Family History: In 1914 the house was leased to the Wheatley Golf Club. The first floor (American usage) served as the clubhouse, while the upper two floors were sublet as flats. By 1933 the downward spiral of the house's fabric forced the golf club to move out. Wheatley Hall was demolished in 1938. The north range of Herstmonceux Castle contains a very fine late 17th century staircase (possibly made by Grinling Gibbons's workshop) that was removed from Wheatley Hall.
