House & Family History: West Green is a 1720s brick-and-ashlar house with classical busts along its garden façade.
Collections: Sotheby's held a sale of the contents in May of 1990, after Lord McAlpine moved to Venice.
Garden & Outbuildings: In the 1970s Robert McAlpine hired the classical architect Quinlan Terry to design follies in the grounds of West Green House. These included a 50-foot-high semi-rusticated column that carries a Latin inscription that translates as "this monument was built with a great deal of money which otherwise someday would have been given into the hands of the public revenue," a trompe-l'œil nymphaeum, and a classical triumphal arch topped with an obelisk that bears a plaque dedicating the arch to the "first lady Prime Minister of Great Britain" (McAlpine was a close friend and supporter of Margaret Thatcher).
