The House from a 1920 postcard
Earlier Houses: A monastery stood on the site of the current house until 1536, when it came into the possession of the king, Henry VIII, as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Welford was kept as Henry VIII's hunting lodge until 1546, when it was gifted to the courtier Sir Thomas Parry.
Garden & Outbuildings: Welford is famous for its snowdrops, which cover over five acres. The first snowdrops were probably planted by Norman monks, both for decoration (bedecking the church for the feast of Candlemas during the dreary month of February) and for medicinal use, think Brother Cadfael.
