House & Family History: Built on on the site of a former moated Medieval hall, Walton Hall is a Palladian style house built in 1767 on an island within a 26-acre lake. It was the ancestral home of the naturalist and traveler Charles Waterton, who made Walton into the world's first wildfowl and nature reserve. In the 1940s, and again in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Walton was a maternity home. It is today part of the Waterton Park Hotel.
