Walcot Hall (Walcot Park)

  • House & Family History: Presiding over its meandering lake, which runs like a great river through the vast William Emes-designed parkland, Walcot Hall was purchased in 1763 by Robert Clive, Lord Clive of India, from the Walcot family, who had owned the Estate since medieval times. Clive commissioned Sir William Chambers to rebuild the red brick house between 1764 and 1767; it was altered again for his son, the 2nd Lord Clive (later 1st Earl of Powis), by the Shrewsbury architect Joseph Bromfield, who added the Ballroom and the Doric portico, which now provides a focus at the center of the entrance facade. After the retrenchment of the earls of Powis to Powis Castle in the 1930s, Walcot was sold to Ronald Stevens, for whom extensive alterations and reductions were made by Albert Thomas Butler in 1933. The Stevens family, in turn, sold up and Walcot became the home of the Parish family, whose seat it remains today. (We are most grateful to Gareth Williams for this history of Walcot Hall.)

  • Garden & Outbuildings: Sir William Chambers redesigned the Stableblock for Clive of India in 1763. Robin and Lucinda Parish, who today live at Walcot, have made great embellishments to the grounds, including the splendid new grotto fountain.
