Vanbrugh Castle (Bastile House)

  • House & Family History: John Vanbrugh built this Gothic style house of yellow brick (originally called Bastile House) on Maze Hill on the east side of Greenwich Park in suburban London for himself. He built the house when he was surveyor to the nearby Royal Naval Hospital and lived here from 1719 until his death in 1726. The house is modeled on the Bastille, where Vanburgh was imprisoned (from 1690 until 1692) on charges of spying for the British. Bastile House was rebuilt in 1904 and is now known as Vanbrugh Castle. Until 1975 the house was occupied by a school run by the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund for the sons of RAF personnel killed in service; it was restored by the Blackheath Preservation Trust in 1977 and is included within the boundaries of the World Heritage Site of Maritime Greenwich. Vanburgh House is now divided into flats.
