  • Earlier Houses: There was an earlier house on, or near, the site of the current house.

Built / Designed For: Alexander Nowell

House & Family History: After being used as a school between 1940 and 1959, Underley became St. Michael's College, a junior seminary for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lancaster in the 1960s. In 1976 the house became an independent residential special school for boys with behavioral difficulties. The school closed in July 2012, amid a flurry of accusations of sexual and physical abuse that was to have taken place between the 1970s and the 1990s.
