Collections: The Clifford papers of 1670 on the Secret Treaty of Dover, formerly in the collection at Ugbrooke, are today in the collection of the British Library. The treaty was an agreement between England and France that required Charles II to convert to Roman Catholicism and to assist Louis XIV with 60 warships and 4,000 soldiers to help in France's war against the Dutch republic; in exchange, Charles would receive a secret annual pension of £230,000, as well as a bonus when he informed the English people of his conversion.
