An 1815 engraving of the house from "The Beauties of England and Wales"
Earlier Houses: There was an earlier Medieval manor house on, or near, the site of the current house.
House & Family History: Between 1902 and 1988 the Congregation of Alexian Brothers (a Catholic lay organization devoted to caring for the sick) ran a hospital at Twyford Abbey. After the Alexians decamped, the house was abandoned and rapidly deteriorated. For many years on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register, Twyford Abbey (and its surrounding grounds) was purchased in March of 2023 by Clarion Housing Group, who began redevelopment in 2024. Clarion will build over 300 new homes on the estate (half of which will be affordable), while their partner Redington will restore the abbey and create new homes in the historic building.
Garden & Outbuildings: The 2024 redevelopment plans call for the creation of a new 1.2-acre public park, which will include the restoration of the walled gardens and outbuildings on the estate.
