Tranby Croft

  • Built / Designed For: Arthur Wilson

House & Family History: Tranby Croft is noted as the location of the Royal Baccarat Scandal. Also known as the Tranby Croft Affair, the incident took place in September of 1890, when Sir William Gordon-Cumming, 4th Bt., a lieutenant colonel in the Scots Guards, was accused of cheating at a game of baccarat (then illegal) hosted by Tranby Croft's owner, Arthur Wilson. Victorian society was scandalized by the affair, primarily because the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, was one of the participants in the game.
