Towton Hall

  • Earlier Houses: There was an older manor house at the opposite end of the village that was demolished.

House & Family History: The manor house of Towton Hall stands on the site of Richard III’s lost chantry chapel, which was commissioned by the king in the 1480s to commemorate the dead of the Battle of Towton, the bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil. The 1461 battle was one of the key battles of the Wars of the Roses (the victory of the Yorkists at Towton secured Edward IV’s position on the throne). 21st century research indicates that the chantry chapel, long thought to be lost, was probably incorporated into the 17th century house.
