The house from a circa 1919 postcard
Built / Designed For: Bryan Leesmith
House & Family History: Bryan Leesmith, who commissioned the house, barely lived here before he sold Tirley Garth, uncompleted, to Brunner Mond in 1912. Mond apparently never lived in the house, leasing it almost immediately to R.H. Prestwich. Soon after Prestwich took possession, Bond sold the freehold to Imperial Chemical Industries. R.H. Prestwich let the the house and estate from ICI until his death in 1940. In 1949 Prestwich's daughter, Irene, purchased the freehold from ICI. Irene Prestwich was very active in the Moral Re-Armament movement (today Initiatives of Change), an international moral and spiritual movement. She vested the ownership of Tirley Garth in a charitable trust, which ran conferences and training programs here until 2002, when the house and estate were sold to Mersey Television (today Lime Pictures).
Garden & Outbuildings: The 40-acre garden at Tirley Girth is the only complete Arts & Crafts style garden in Cheshire.
