Thornbridge Hall

  • Earlier Houses: There was at least one earlier house on, or near, the site of the current house.

House & Family History: Over the double flight staircase in the Great Hall (which features a barrel-vaulted plasterwork ceiling) are windows designed by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. After the 1945 death of Henry Charles Boot, Sheffield City Council purchased the house at auction for £42,000 and used it as a teacher training college (Thornbridge Hall College of Education) until 1975, and, after the school closed, as an education center; the council sold Thornbridge in 1997. Charles Boot was a very successful businessman and film producer. Under his leadership, Henry Boot & Sons built more houses in Britain during the inter-war years than any other company. Boot was also the founder of Pinewood Studios, today one of the world's largest film studios.

Collections: After its 1929 sale by George Marples, there was a three-day auction of the contents in June of 1930. After the 1938 demolition of Clumber House (carried out by Henry Boot & Sons), statues and other elements from the great Nottinghamshire house came to Thornbridge. After Boot's death in 1945 the contents were sold again.
