The house from a circa 1901 postcard
Earlier Houses: There was at least one earlier house on, or near, the site of the current house.
House & Family History: Over the double flight staircase in the Great Hall (which features a barrel-vaulted plasterwork ceiling) are windows designed by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. After the 1945 death of Henry Charles Boot, Sheffield City Council purchased the house at auction for £42,000 and used it as a teacher training college (Thornbridge Hall College of Education) until 1975. After the school closed the house was used as an education center. Sheffield Council sold Thornbridge in 1997. Charles Boot was a very successful businessman and film producer. Under his leadership, Henry Boot & Sons built more houses in Britain during the inter-war years than any other company. Boot was also a founder of Pinewood Studios, today one of the world's largest film studios.
Collections: After its 1929 sale by George Marples, there was a three-day auction of the contents in June of 1930. After the 1938 demolition of Clumber House (carried out by Henry Boot & Sons), statues and other elements from the great Nottinghamshire house came to Thornbridge. After Boot's death in 1945 the contents were sold again.
Garden & Outbuildings: The house sits in 12 acres of grounds.
