The House from a circa 1910 postcard
A 1940s Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith limousine in front of Goodhart Hall at Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Charles Rolls, co-founder of Rolls-Royce, grew up at The Hendre.
Built / Designed For: John Rolls
House & Family History: The Hendre was originally built as a shooting lodge that was repeatedly enlarged over the 19th century until it became a proper country house. In 1900 the duke and duchess of York (later King George V and Queen Mary) stayed with Baron and Baroness Llangattock at The Hendre. During the royal couple's stay in Monmouthshire Lord and Lady Llangattock's son, Charles Rolls, co-founder of Rolls-Royce, took the couple on what was probably their first ride in a motor car. The Harding-Rolls family sold The Hendre to Effold Properties in 1984; the house is today home to The Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club.
