The Greenway (Shurdington House)

  • Built / Designed For: Lawrence family

House & Family History: Circa 1690-92 William Lawrence added a square rooftop study to the 1625 house; the study was replaced, probably in the 18th century, by a cupola, which was itself removed circa 1970. In 1835 and 1865 alterations took place; however, the greatest changes came in 1910, when Archdeacon Sinclair employed Ernest Newton to enlarge The Greenway and remodel the interiors (which included the addition of the early 17th century carved wooden overmantel added to the Dining Room). During these alterations projecting wings were added on the East Facade and the Service Wing was added to the north of the House. George Constable Hayes, who died in 1946, was the last private owner of The Greenway. The House is today a hotel.
