An early 19th century hand-colored engraving of the house from "The Beauties of England and Wales"
House & Family History: Temple Grove acquired its name because it was the home of the politician and diplomat Sir William Temple, who lived here in the 17th century with his secretary and personal assistant, Jonathan Swift. Between 1810 and 1907 the house served as Temple Grove School (the school moved to Eastbourne in 1907 and permanently closed in 2005). During the 19th century Temple Grove School was one of the "Famous Five" of English prep schools (the most prestigious and desirable schools).
