Tawstock Court

  • Earlier Houses: There was an earlier house of the Bourchiers (here since the mid-15th century) nearby.

House & Family History: Tawstock was rebuilt by Sir Bourchier Wrey (possibly to his own designs) after a fire in 1787. Sir John Soane visited the House in 1789 and provided a number of drawings for finishing the interiors (the top-lit stair in the North Wing is by Soane). The main façade is Gothic, long, and stuccoed. There are two-story canted bays that are castellated and symmetrical. There were significant alterations to the House in 1885 and a one-story extension of 1978. Between 1940 and the early 21st century Tawstock was occupied by St. Michael's School (St. Michael's Nursery now lets a building on the edge of the Tawstock Estate). Tawstock, together with 32 acres, sold in 2012 for over £1 million.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: The Grade II*-listed polygonal turreted and four-centered arched Gatehouse of 1574 was built by Bourchiers as part of the complex of buildings of the earlier house. There are two former Stableblocks that have been adapted for school use. In addition, there is a rustic Lodge with Gothic windows and a tree-trunk veranda, a circular folly tower with Gothic windows, and fine gatepiers.
