Swythamley Hall

  • Earlier Houses: The current House incorporates the foundations of a medieval hunting lodge and the remains of a 17th century house that was destroyed by fire in 1813.

House & Family History: The current house was rebuilt after the 1813 fire around a remaining recently-built wing. In 1832 Swythamley was sold by the Trafford family, who had been granted the Estate in 1540, to John Brocklehurst. In 1897 the House was considerably enlarged by Phillip Brocklehurst. In 1977 the Brocklehurst family heir, John van Haeften, broke up the Estate and sold the House and parkland to the World Government for the Age of Enlightenment, followers of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, which opened a training center for teachers of Transcendental Meditation. In 1987 the House was sold to Mr. R.M. Naylor and subsequently divided into flats, with the Stables (Coach House) converted into a single home with 130 acres attached to it.
