House & Family History: The Shireburns were an important and powerful Lancashire recusant family that owned the Stonyhurst Estate until the 18th century. In 1794 Thomas Weld (a Shireburn descendant) offered shelter at Stonyhurst to Jesuits from Liège who were fleeing revolutionary France. In 1809 Weld formally gifted the house and 30 acres of grounds to the Jesuits, who have operated a school here ever since.
