The house from a circa 1919 postcard
Earlier Houses: There was at least one earlier house on, or near, the site of the current house.
House & Family History: During World War II South Walsham Hall was a convalescence home and the gardens were used as a training ground for the Home Guard. The garden was opened to the public for the first time on April 18, 1975. The house served as South Walsham Country Club from 1977 until 2001. In 2021 the house was listed for sale for £3.5 million. South Walsham is noted for its 1693 staircase (signed by Marot), which was made from the timbers of HMS "Britannia," a 100-gun first rate Royal Navy ship of the line launched in 1682. The staircase, formerly at Russell House in Convent Garden, was installed at South Walsham in 1943.
Collections: Some contents of South Walsham Hall were auctioned in London by Christie's on September 10, 2007.
