House & Family History: In 1690, after the Battle of the Boyne, King James II sheltered at Shelton Abbey before fleeing to the Continent. In 1951 the 8th and last Earl of Wicklow sold the Shelton Estate to the Irish government for use as a residential forestry training facility. In the 1970s the Estate was repurposed as an open prison for men.
