Salston Manor

  • Earlier Houses: An earlier farmhouse (probably 18th century) existed on the site of the current house.

Built / Designed For: William Hart Coleridge

House & Family History: The current house was built to imitate an Elizabethan mansion in 1822 by William Hart Coleridge, first colonial bishop of Barbados and the Leeward Islands, after a fire destroyed an 18th century farmhouse on the site, part of which were incorporated into the west wing. The East extension, including the Ballroom, was built in the late 19th century, apparently for a visit of the princess of Teck. The last of the Coleridge family, Betty Coleridge (who married Sir Charles Cave), sold the house in 1950, but retained Higher Lodge, together with all the surrounding farmland. In 1959 the House was bought from the Ullman family by Neills and Betty Svendsen, who turned it into a hotel.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: The Salston Ride Estate's walled gardens and stable block are now part of the Otterhayes Trust (www.otterhayes.co.uk), who train young people with learning disabilities to go out into the community.
