House & Family History: Saint Hill is one of the finest Sussex sandstone buildings. In 1959, L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, purchased the mansion from Sawai Man Singh, the Maharajah of Jaipur, after which it became the British headquarters of the Church of Scientology. Saint Hill is noted for its famous monkey mural, painted in 1945 by John Spencer Churchill, nephew of Winston Churchill. The 100-foot-long mural depicts many famous personalities of the mid-20th century as monkeys, including Sir Winston.
