House & Family History: The first building on the site was a preceptory of the Knights Templar, to whom the manor was given by King Henry III; the preceptory was later was transferred to the Knights Hospitalers of St. John of Jerusalem. During the Dissolution of the Monasteries Rothley Temple became the private home of the Babington family.

Notes: Manchester architect who was articled to Henry John Paull and Oliver Aycliffe, 1864-69. Ely was an architectural assistant to the Salford Corporation in 1872 and chief assistant to Edward Salomons from 1873 to 1874, with whom he was in partnership between 1875 and 1886. From 1887 onward Ely was in individual practice.
