Pypers Castle (Pipers Elms) (Elm House) (The Elms)

  • Earlier Houses: There was an Elizabethan farmhouse on the site that was replaced by an 18th century villa, which forms the core of the current house.

House & Family History: A three-bay villa of Bath stone, circa 1776, forms the core of the current house (there is a beautiful central staircase of 1776); this was enlarged into a more substantial house in the early 19th century. In the 1850s the Conservatory was added to the East Facade, and in 1939 another expansion, this one doubling the size of the House, engorged Pypers to 40 rooms. The House has gone through a number of names: in the 16th century it was called Pipers Elms, in the 18th century it was Elm House, then The Elms in the 19th century; finally it was renamed Pypers in 1939 by the Whites, who doubled the size of the House. There has been a close link with Bristol and Pypers: the Tonges, a Bristol merchant family, made the House their seat in the early 19th century; a Mr. Gardiner, who owned a large hardware store in Bristol, made Pypers his home in the late 19th century.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: The late 18th century Stables and Kitchen Garden are extant. The handsome entrance gates were made for Mr. Gardiner in the late 19th century.
