House & Family History: Poulton was built in 1652 and enlarged in 1720 and 1840. The Hall was the home of Richard Lancelyn-Green, British scholar and world authority on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes. In 2004, after his death, Richard Lancelyn-Green's Doyle-Holmes collection of 20,000 items, worth over £2 million, was donated to the Portsmouth Central Library and City Museum, including a recreation of Holmes's residence at 221-B Baker Street, formerly housed in an attic room in Poulton Hall (Doyle had set up a medical practice in Portsmouth, where the first two Sherlock Holmes books were written).
