Penllergare House

  • Earlier Houses: The Price family built a three-story, five-bay house here circa 1710 that was partly demolished in the 19th century.

House & Family History: The Price family built a three-story, five-bay house here circa 1710. About 1800 that house passed to John Llewelyn of Ynysygerwyn, who built an adjoining two-story block with canted bows. Edward Haycock was engaged, 1835-36, by John Dillwyn Llewelyn (a notable scientist and botanist) to demolish the Price house and enlarge and alter the rest, which he did by adding a two-story portico (later enclosed), an elliptical staircase hall, and a circular bedroom (now at Llysdinam, Powys). In 1927 the last member of the family to live in the House, Sir John Llewelyn, MP, died; what followed was the all-too-familiar story of decline and institutional use. Penllergare was blown up in 1961.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: Haycock designed two lodges, one which was demolished, the other is extant. The botanist John Dillwyn Llewelyn built an orchid house on the grounds and filled the gardens with rare plants.

  • Architect: Edward Haycock Sr.
