Notes: Hawksmoor was trained by Christopher Wren in architectural design and history and worked with Vanbrugh. Vaughan Hart, writing in his book "Nicholas Hawksmoor: Rebuilding Ancient Wonders" (2002), refers to the unique signature Hawksmoor gave his "haunting buildings which still connect, as powerfully as any Picasso, with our innermost hopes and fears." Hawksmoor designed the towers of the west front of Westminster Abbey.

Nickname: Carr of York
Notes: Known as "Carr of York," most of his work was in the north of England, primarily in his native Yorkshire. Carr's only major work in the south was Basildon Park in Berkshire. Carr probably designed more stables (over 40) than any other Georgian architect.

Notes: Emes was an English landscape designer. He was appointed head gardener to Sir Nathaniel Curzon at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire, and only left that post when he was pushed out by Robert Adam, who insisted on taking over responsibility for the entire management of the grounds. Reportedly a pupil of Capability Brown, Emes himself took on John Webb (a former pupil) as his partner.

Notes: Rebuilt east front of Dyrham Park, 1689. Redesigned much of Chatsworth for the first Duke of Devonshire. Architect for Kimberley. Was Comptroller of the Royal Works for William III. Howard Colvin calls Talman "probably the leading Whig architect of the 1680s and 1690s." Talman was famously difficult to work with and was fired by many of his clients.
