House & Family History: Palmerstown House was rebuilt in the Queen Anne style in the late 19th century by public subscription in memory of the 6th Earl of Mayo, whose seat this was. Lord Mayo, who had served as viceroy of India and chief secretary of Ireland in the British government, had been assassinated in the Andaman Islands in 1872 by an escaped convict. The House burned in 1923 and was rebuilt with the addition of a parapet and flat roof. The famous cook Mrs. Lawlor began her culinary career at Palmerstown as cook to the 7th Earl and Countess of Mayo.
