House & Family History: The house has been converted into flats and is in separate ownership from the garden.

Comments: The 20th and 21st century garden restoration is considered one of the finest examples of garden conservation in Europe.
Garden & Outbuildings: The grounds at Painshill were created by Charles Hamilton between 1738 and 1773 (Hamilton was William Beckford's great uncle). The gardens were conceived and laid out as pleasure grounds for fashionable 18th century society and contain a 14-acre lake fed from the river by a large waterwheel, a grotto, the Chinese Bridge, a ruined abbey, Robert Adam's Temple of Bacchus (1761), the mausoleum, the castellated tower, the Turkish Tent, and a vineyard. Painshill is today considered one of Europe's finest 18th century landscape gardens.

Notes: Lane and his son Josiah were local quarrymen in Tisbury, Wiltshire. They were much-used by Alderman Beckford in the design and creation of grottoes on his estate, Fonthill Splendens. They were popular throughout the West Country for their unique grottoes.

Notes: The prolific Robert Adam was the son of William Adam, Sr., and one of the four Adam brothers. Robert is noted for having "Never once built a great house from scratch," though he was the "it" architect of the 1760s and 70s, with an impressive and aristocratic client list a mile long. The Georgian House, Edinburgh, is considered by many to be Adam's urban masterpiece. Among his finest works are the Library of Kenwood House, London; Culzean Castle, Ayrshire; the Library of Mellerstain House, Scottish Borders; Syon House, London; and Newby Hall in Yorkshire.
