Odell Castle

  • Earlier Houses: After the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror gave the lands of Odell to Walter de Flandrensis and created him Baron of Wahull. Circa 1068 Lord Wahull built a motte-and-bailey castle with a stone keep (the first house) on the Odell lands. The de Wahul famly (as they became) lived here for over 400 years, until the male line died out in 1542. In 1633 the Odell Estate was purchased by William Alston, who demolished the medieval house and built a new house (the second house), using material from the first house. It is this second house, which was demolished in 1931, that is the primary focus of this record.
