Notes: Tipping was an early 20th century writer, architect, and garden designer. He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford, in 1878 and went on to work for "The Garden" and became an expert on wood carving, particularly the work of Grinling Gibbons. Tipping was most noted as the Architectural Editor of "Country Life" magazine between 1907 and 1910 and again 1916-30. In his architectural practice he specialized in the restoration of country houses and the layout of gardens. He entered into partnership with Eric Carwardine in 1911. His gardens were characterized by divided compartments with sculpted yew hedging, topiary birds and animals, long grass bowling greens, lush planting, and wild areas. Tipping was a friend of Harold Peto, Gertrude Jekyll, and Edwin Lutyens and was influenced by their work.
