Newtimber Place

  • House & Family History: Newtimber is moated house (the moat is fed by natural springs and is 50 feet wide in places) of flint and brick with a roof of Horsham stone. The original house was probably built by Richard Bellingham's son, who was Sheriff of Sussex in 1567. The House is noted for the 18th century wall paintings and tapestry furnishings in the Hall inspired by the engravings in William Hamilton's 1776 book "Antiquites Etrusques Grecques et Romaines."

  • Garden & Outbuildings: There is extant today a Georgian dovecote in the grounds.

  • Country Life: XL, 780 plan, 1916.
