The House from a circa 1900 postcard
House & Family History: The tower with detached gatehouse was built for George Maxwell, shortly after 1478, and is the oldest part of the House. Patrick Maxwell, frequently called Patrick the Wicked, is noted for the murder of two of his neighbors in the 16th century. In the late 16th century Newark Castle was extended to the north. General Sir David Leslie (elevated as the 1st Lord Newark in 1661) purchased the House in 1649 and probably remodeled the main block.
Garden & Outbuildings: A 16th century beehive doocot is extant.
