The house from a circa 1920 postcard
Earlier Houses: There has been a house here since before the Norman Conquest, when the property was owned by the bishops of London. A large Elizabethan house was built to the east of current house by the Dalton family in the late 16th century; it was this house that was demolished when the current house was built.
Built / Designed For: James Brebner Gordon
House & Family History: The name of the estate comes from the More family, who were the local squires in the 15th century. Moor Place then passed through a number of owners until it was purchased in 1750 by James Brebner Gordon, who built the existing house. The estate came into the ownership of the Norman family in the late 19th century; in the 20th century the Normans distinguished themselves by producing two exceptional members: Montagu Norman, governor of the Bank of England from 1920 to 1944, and Ronald Norman, chairman of the BBC and the London County Council. In the late 20th century the estate was marketed as Moor Place Equestrian. Moor Place was listed for sale in early 2014 for £17 million. At the end of 2021 the house, together with 80 acres, was listed for sale again—this time for £12 million.
