House & Family History: The Kemp family owned Mergate Hall from the late 15th century until 1936, when the family line came to an end. Elizabeth Kemp was, in 1523, lady of the bedchamber to the first wife of Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon. Queen Elizabeth I is believed to have stayed at Mergate in August of 1578. In December of 2006 Mergate Hall was listed for sale at a guide price of £1.95 million.
Garden & Outbuildings: The garden contains a weeping larch, recorded as having been planted in 1712, that is believed to be the first Canadian larch to have been grown in England
