House & Family History: William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling, was a poet (among his most notable works are "Aurora" and "The Monarchick Tragedies") who, in the 1620s, was involved in the Scottish colonization of Nova Scotia and Long Island, New York. Lord Stirling also owned a number of New England islands (Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, and the Elizabeth Islands) that were sold by his grandson, the 2nd Earl of Stirling, to Thomas Mayhew for £40 and two beaver skin hats.
