Marske Hall

  • Earlier Houses: There was probably at least one earlier house on, or near, the site of the current house.

Built / Designed For: Timothy Hutton

House & Family History: The Hutton family built Marske Hall in the early 17th century and were still living here in the 1730s, when the house was rebuilt and extended in the classical style. During World War II Marske Hall was home to Scarborough College, whose students were evacuated here during the war. In the 1960s the house was sold to a developer who converted it into 10 flats. In 2021 Marske Hall was listed for sale for £2.5 million.

Collections: The Richmond Race Cup of 1764 was won by John Hutton III (sometimes mistakenly called John Hutton II) of Marske Hall, one of the 18th century's most enthusiastic supporters of the turf. The silver gilt cup was designed by Robert Adam and marked by Daniel Smith and Robert Sharp in London 1764-65. The cup is today in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (see photo in "Images" section).

  • Garden & Outbuildings: The house sits in 20 acres of grounds. The Grade II-listed 18th century quadrangular stableblock was converted into holiday cottages in 2021.
