The House from an early 20th century postcard
Built / Designed For: Sir Robert Brooke
House & Family History: Madeley Court was built as a grange to Wenlock Priory. During the Dissolution of the Monasteries it was purchased by Sir Robert Brooke, speaker of the House of Commons, who converted it into a private home. In the early 18th century the house was let by Abraham Darby I, whose innovation of smelting iron with coke instead of charcoal at Coalbrookdale in 1709 is generally regarded as the process that started the Industrial Revolution. Madeley is today a hotel.
