The house on fire in 1926
Earlier Houses: There were probably a number of earlier houses on, or near, the site of the current house. In the 11th century the manor of Lupton (then called Lochetone) was listed in the "Domesday Book."
Built / Designed For: Charles II Hayne
House & Family History: In 1926 a major fire severely damaged the house (see "Images" section). Though Lupton was restored after the fire, the third floor was not rebuilt. During World War II Lupton House was occupied by the American military. After the end of the war the house became a hotel and later served as the home of a series schools (Fenton School and Lupton House School), a purpose it served until 2004, when the last of the schools, Gramercy Hall School, closed. In 2008 ownership was taken over by the Lupton Trust, who open the house for tours and weddings and events.
