Earlier Houses: A pre-Norman Conquest manor house stood on the site of the current house.

House & Family History: A house has stood on the site of today's manor since at least the year 1004. The current house has been added to and altered over many generations, with significant sections dating from the late 17th century. The name Lower Slaughter does not recall some fearful bygone carnage, as might be supposed; it probably comes from the name of a Norman knight, Philip de Sloitre, who was granted land here by William the Conqueror in the 11th century.
