Lingholm

  • Built / Designed For: James Fenton Greenall

House & Family History: Between 1885 and 1907 Beatrix Potter spent her summer and fall vacations at Lingholm. She wrote 1903's "The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin" (supposedly inspired by the estate's red squirrels) and the first draft of "The Tale of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle" (1905) during her holidays at the house and credited the garden kitchen at Lingholm as the inspiration for Mr. McGregor’s garden in "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" (1902). During World War I the house was used as a hospital for wounded officers.

Collections: In 1903 a 15th century fireplace from a palazzo in Arezzo was installed in the drawing room.
