Langwell House

  • House & Family History: The Langwell Estate was bought by Sir John Sinclair in 1788 for £7,000; in 1813 James Horne, Esq., purchased the Estate for £40,000; the 5th Duke of Portland purchased Langwell in 1860 for £90,000, equivalent to approximately £60 million in 2016 inflation-adjusted values using the labour value commodity index.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: Langwell has a Walled Garden, a forest, and Langwell Water, which rises in the Langwell Forest and flows east to the North Sea coast at Berriedale. The Langwell Estate today stands at 17,000 acres.
