Earlier Houses: There was very likely a Medieval house on the site of the current house.
House & Family History: It's possible that Sir Christopher Wren began work on the current house in the early 1680s. Charles II made a home here with Louise de Keroualle, one of his mistresses. The scandalous 1744 secret marriage of Elizabeth Chudleigh and Augustus Hervey took place in the chapel at Lainston.
Garden & Outbuildings: The grounds contain the longest line of lime trees (planted in 1716) in England.
Country Life: XLV, 252, 1919.
