House & Family History: Lord Thurlow, a close friend of George III, served as lord chancellor between 1778 and 1792. A most unpleasant, reactionary conservative, he opposed any reform of Parliament and vigorously supported slavery. He never married; at his death Lord Thurlow left Knight's Hill to his mistress, Polly Humphries, with whom he had three children.
Garden & Outbuildings: At the time of Lord Thurlow's residence the Knight's Hill Estate spanned 1,000 acres.
