Kinneil House

  • Earlier Houses: There was an earlier building on the site of today's complex of buildings.

    Collections: Dr. John Roebuck, founder of Carron Iron Works, lived at Kinneil House during in the 18th century; it was during Roebuck's tenancy that James Watt developed his first engine in a cottage adjacent to the House, giving Kinneil claim to being the birthplace of the improved steam engine.

  • Garden & Outbuildings: The grounds include a section of the Roman Antonine Wall and the only example of an Antonine fortlet standing today.

  • Past Seat / Home of: James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran, 16th century; James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton, 17th century; William Douglas, 3rd Duke of Hamilton, 17th century; Hamilton family here from 1323 until 1936 John Roebuck, 19th century (as tenant).
