He entered Caius College, Cambridge, as a scholar in 1796 and began independent practice in Cambridge in 1804. According to Howard Colvin, Wilkins's earliest recorded work, Osberton Hall in Nottinghamshire, "...is notable for its Greek Doric portico [demolished], the first full-scale, pure Grecian portico in British domestic architecture." As the leading British oracle of the pure Greek Revival style, Wilkins is particularly remembered today as architect of The National Gallery, London, and Downing College, Cambridge.
