Kentwell Hall (Kentwall Hall)

  • Earlier Houses: There was an earlier house on the site of the current house.

Built / Designed For: Sir William Clopton (born in the 14th century)

House & Family History: William Clopton (born 1541) hosted Queen Elizabeth I at Kentwell in 1578; the queen, according to local lore, was not impressed by her accommodation and meals at Kentwell and called it Hungry Hall. Kentwell was digitally surveyed in great detail so that it could be rebuilt in New Zealand and used (suitably adapted for filming) as the professor's house for the 2005 movie "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."

  • Garden & Outbuildings: The approach to house is through an avenue of limes three-quarters of a mile long. The grounds contain an unusual square dovecote, the largest in Suffolk. The farm is organically operated.
